밴드웨건 효과 / 편승효과 (bandwagon effect)는 다수의 소비자나 유행을 따라 상품을 구입하는 현상을 의미한다. 이 효과는 역사적으로 미국의 서부 개척 당시 금을 찾아 나서는 행렬을 선도하는 악대차(樂隊車, bandwagon)를 무작정 뒤따르는 사람들을 보고 이를 비유하여 레이번슈타인이 명명한 개념이다.

bandwagon effect refers to the phenomenon of purchasing products according to a large number of consumers or trends. This effect is a concept historically named by Ravenstein by seeing and comparing those who recklessly follow bandwagon, which leads the procession of searching for gold during the pioneering of the West of the United States.

 

 

 

이러한 현상의 또 다른 이름이 ‘편승 효과’나 ‘모방소비’이다. 기업이 광고를 통해 적극적 마케팅 전략을 펼치거나 정치가가 특정 후보의 여론몰이를 시도하는 것, 특정 펀드나 주식에 열풍이 부는 현상은 모두 밴드웨건 효과의 사례로 볼 수 있다.

The phenomenon of companies implementing active marketing strategies through advertisements, politicians attempting to attract public opinion of certain candidates, and the craze for certain funds or stocks can all be seen as examples of the bandwagon effect.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

소비 분야에서는 과거 유행했던 허니버터칩을 보면, 이 역시 다른 사람들이 맛있다고 한 것, SNS, 뉴스 등을 접한 사람들이 "그럼 나도 한번 먹어볼까?"라고 생각하고 행동에 옮겼다는 점에서 밴드 왜건 효과가 작동한 예가 된다.

또, 교육 분야에서는 사교육이 대표적이다. 내 아이가 공부에 소질이 있다, 없다는 것은 누구보다도 그 부모님들이 가장 잘 알지만 사교육을 계속 시키는 이유는 "옆집 다른 아이들은 하는데 우리 아이만 하지 않으면 왠지 뒤처지는 것이 아닐까 해서"라고 한다. 전형적인 밴드 왜건 효과가 작동한 사례라 할 수 있다.
